I woke up, groggy and all I could smell was the mix of rotting meat and cat littler. I coughed and promptly puked on the ground beside me. I tried to fight through the fog of the chloroform and I mentally checked myself for any new injuries. There were none. Just the same persistent aches I’d had before coming into this alley what I assumed were hours ago.
It was light, probably close to afternoon by the look of the sky.
“Miss…are you okay?”
I looked up. There’s an elderly man holding a trash can and he looks shocked to see me leaning up against the garbage bags.
“Yeah…” I cough
“Look I don’t want any trouble….”
“I’m not a junkie.” I supply. I try to get up and stumble.
“I’m going to call an ambulance….” He drops the can and goes back into the store.
Great. A hospital stay. Set me up next to Laura. This was just bloody wonderful. What I thought was going to be just a simple meeting where H4ck3r tells me what his deal is, turns into crazy ranting by someone that was dropped a little too much on their head as child. But on the bright side, I was starting to understand a little…he or she was just plain crazy…not a varying degree. I know the handcuffing me thing was just adding further insult to injury.
I was fine but if I didn’t at least humour this elderly man he might get skittish and things were already freaky enough.
He returned a few minutes later and rushed to my side. He handed me a paper cup and some kind of pastry.
“Thanks.” I smile at him and sip the water.
“What happened?” he asks.
“It’s a long story. I was kidnapped and then dumped back here. My Boyfriend is probably losing his shit.”
“You should call him.” The man suggests.
I knew I should but I just didn’t have the strength to deal with Drake at this particular moment. I pulled out my phone and found his number and as it dialled I handed the phone to the man.
“His name is Drake.” I said, still hoarse.
The Man listened and I could hear the buzzing sound indicating that someone was speaking on the other end.
“No…no sir my name is Lyle McIntyre. I own a store off of 73rd. I found your girlfriend here in an alley. She seems okay but I called an ambulance anyway.”
He listened for a bit.
“She’s kind of shaken up, she said she was kidnapped.” More silence from Lyle
“Uh huh. Yes I’ll make sure she’s taken care of. I don’t know if you’ll make it here before the truck but I’ll keep an eye for you.”
He hung up and handed me back my phone.
“He seems like a nice young man.”
“Thanks. Did he sound okay?”
“I think he’s relieved you’re okay.” Lyle pulled over a wooden crate and sat beside me. “What did a pretty girl like you do to deserve to get kidnapped anyway?”
I sighed and took a bite of the honey bun he’d given me. It was pure bliss in my mouth. Breakfast pastry….heaven incarnate.
"Let’s just say that this person wanted me to be his sidekick and I wasn’t biting.”
“Oh boy…mafia?”
I laugh. “No, nothing like that. Sir, do you ever watch professional wrestling?”
“Not really…my son does.”
“Oh well see me and my boyfriend are wrestlers and we’re in the middle of something pretty serious.”
“You wrestle? Why would you do that? You could be a model with your looks.”
I blush a little. The man, for being ancient, wasn’t hard on the eyes…I mean if I was actually into older men.
“Believe me, I’ve been approached but I’m good at what I do.”
I heard sirens blaring in the distance and knew my ride was coming.
“What time is it anyway?” I ask, still not trusting my eyes to look at my phone closely.
“Nearly 11 am.” He says.
“Hmmm. Wonder how long I was out…” I said it more to myself than to Lyle.
The ambulance stops in front of the alley and in seconds there are two NY Paramedics entering. Lyle stands and waves them over. They run and bend down in front of me. One is a pretty decent looking man with deep brows and ruddy skin. The other is a young woman who was probably a rookie.
“Are you feeling light headed?” the male paramedic asked, shining a light into my eyes.
“I am now….ouch….”
He pulls out a stethoscope and pulls down the fleece to place it against my chest. He barks out numbers to the girl who writes them down. He checks me over and when he presses on my rib I wince.
He looks at me.
“Prior injury.” I supply.
“You’re pretty bruised up too…”
“Occupational hazard.” I cough out as he presses a little too hard on a bruise on my arm.
“Lexi!” I look up and see Drake running into the alley.
“Sir…” the man stands and tries to keep him back.
“Mate, that’s my girlfriend….”
“Let us look her over to make sure she’s not seriously injured.”
The woman is continuing to look me over.
“Can you tell me what happened?” she asks putting a blood pressure cuff on me.
“Yeah a psycho lured me into an alley promising me the truth and instead knocks me out with chloroform and handcuffs me to a radiator. Then he starts talking about mythology and garbage. Then I woke up here with Lyle.”
I nod over at the shopkeeper whose nervously wringing his hands. I’d save any other bits I’d learned for Drake later in private. It was none of these people’s business. Maybe If I told Drake that I suspected that H4ck3r was this little friend from his past, it might clear up some foggy passages.
I glance over at Drake whose face has started to turn a deep shade of red. I didn’t know if he was more pissed at me or at H4ck3r.
“He didn’t do anything else to you?” I knew she was implying rape. I’m still looking at Drake. God help hacker if he did actually touch me like that.
“No. He’s not that kind of weirdo.”
Drake is still breathing heavy, the male paramedic still holding him back.
“Are you sure…we can run a rape kit anyway to be sure….” Maybe she thought that I didn’t want to say anything with my boyfriend there.
"No pretty sure that even if he did that he’d want me to remember it.”
“We’ll take her in for observation, we don’t know what dose that guy used and if there are any lasting effects.”
“Stay here, we’ll bring the stretcher.” The woman smiled at me and she and the male went back to the truck, leaving Drake free to come to me and kneel in front of me.
“Are you stupid?” he asked, shaking his head. “What in the world possessed you to do this by yourself?”
I shrugged. “I didn’t think he’d actually take me.”
He shook his head and laughed mockingly. “You can’t trust him. He’s lost his bloody mind. God I was just about to lose it if he had touched you….”
“Surprisingly, he was decent. I guess. It was weird and I’m weirded out by it. I’ll tell you about it later; right now…I just want to get out of this garbage, literally.” I sigh. “Looks like you get your wish… they’re probably going to be keeping me in the hospital during Bright Lights.”
“I don’t care about the match Lexi. I woke up this morning and you were gone. I had no idea where you went. Then he sends me a message saying that he has you. We’ve all been out looking for you.”
“He has some weird secret bat cave or something. I was drugged when he brought me there and he re-drugged me to take me out. He’s got pictures of everyone all over the walls and some other pictures…old pictures Drake…of you and someone else….”
The paramedics were coming back with the stretcher before he could respond. They lowered it and started to help me up onto it and the sudden movement flipped my world and the well loved honey bun ended up on the pavement. Drake held my hair. I was handed some paper towel by Lyle and I smiled.
“Sorry…it was good going down.”.
He shrugged. “It happens. “
“Thanks for the help.” I smiled and they tightened the straps to make sure I didn’t fall off and the way I was feeling, I might just.
Drake walked along side the stretcher.
“I’ll be okay Drake.”
“Yeah you’ve been telling me that for the last week and things only seem to be getting worse.”
“Things can’t possibly get any worse.” I moaned, my stomach starting to churn again. It was worse that being drunk. I was going to google ways of avoiding being drugged again, this was the absolute pits.
“Wanna bet? He’s been planning whatever it is he’s planning for months if not years. If you think this is the extent of what he’s going to do you are sadly mistaken. I wish I were wrong. But for now, let’s make sure you’re taken care of.”
The paramedics counted and lifted the stretcher into the ambulance. I happen to look up as I do and I see something. A dark figure on the roof above the alley. I don’t have time to react and I sure as hell don’t want Drake running off after him. He wouldn’t catch him, but he’d watched over me until someone came to help me, like he said he would. In his own sick twisted way he thought he was looking out for me. I tried very hard to push away the feelings of sympathy I was having. Was this part of his plan? It was pretty twisted if she thought this was going to convince me to side with him? I still knew hardly anything and I wouldn’t be falling for his schemes again….I was pretty sure I’d at least found out that H4ck3r was a classic woman scorned but man, I had to give her credit, she had mad skill.
I shook myself and saw that H4ck3r was gone. Drake had climbed into the back of the ambulance with me and he was looking at me strangely. He didn’t say anything but I knew he was wondering what I’d found out, if I had learned something that would change the way I felt about him. IF anything, it just made me despise H4ck3r a little more. If anyone knows what betrayal feels like, this girl does. If any girl knows what it means to be in a situation you don’t want to be in, I know. More little secrets that I wasn’t ready to tell Drake just yet. I didn’t need him to blow a gasket and kill Ryan….although I was sickened by his behaviour; it wasn’t up to me to punish him for those deeds. I only hoped that Drake and Johnny could do this match handicapped.
