Skype is a magnificent technology. The idea that humans can not only talk to each other from thousands of kilometers apart, but can actually see each other, read expressions, show each other what they’re doing, what they look like, how they’re feeling…. It’s a testament to just how much people need each other. Out of man’s many quests, isn’t it ironic his two greatest advancements were in how to communicate with each other, and how to kill each other. When men lived too far apart to speak to each other, they trained horses, and sped up travel, they invented taverns, and inns, where people could get together, the built villages, and towns, and cities, so that they could live closer together, but still the world grew, and people spread out more, they invented writing, and found ways to speak not only to each other, but to the people of the future, they used the writing to send letters, they invented ships so that the letters could even travel over seas, then cars, and trucks, to deliver the messages even faster. Bell invented the telephone, and that was surely a moment of rejoicing for the human race, for who among us can imagine not being able to merely push a few buttons and instantly be able to hear and speak to another person, as if they were standing next to you. But both had to be at a phone for that, so e-mail was created, and suddenly the slow speed of letters was replaced with an instant, a moment, a nanosecond, that was all communication took. Then cellphones allowed us to have all the magic of a telephone, anywhere we wanted. More and more and more it became apparent that the ability to talk to anyone, anywhere, at any point, was something that had become a nessecary part of millions of peoples’ lives. Then it got even better, and the way it got better was going back to where it started. Talking to someone, face to face, all of the elements of human communication that each and every one of us was born with open, out for all to see. Only it still could happen anywhere, anytime. Just a computer screen between you and your loved one, or your business partner, or a person you had never met before, but you have now, all because of mans quest to connect themselves to everyone.
A beautiful speech Will, but what exactly was your point?
I’ve forgotten.
Kamilla laughed at that, which made me laugh too. It had been months since we had been able to talk, she was always busy working one of her two jobs, trying her hardest to get herself through school as a physical trainer. I had told her countless times not to work herself too hard, but that was like telling a ball not to roll when you set it on a ramp. Kami never thought she had done enough to help our family back when mum and dad were still alive, and she always beat herself up over it. She was always either working in the Frau Ringen Deutschland, or as a waitress at some restaurant.
So how did your match go this week?
Oh, I lost again. Devil’s Bride didn’t even really give me a chance to get going, but people seemed to enjoy the match, and she’s really nice, so we had fun with it.
She might have some issues with the past, but she never lets anything get her down. Always a smile on her face, and she never has anything bad to say about anyone. Something that had gotten her into trouble before. When we were younger I often found myself having to rescue her from some of the more scum like members of the male population. She didn’t like hurting peoples’ feelings, and often ended up surrendering her own safety to avoid it. Now though, she had taken on the role of fiercely protective older sister, so she was less worried about other people’s feelings and more about Tija’s
Have I mentioned between the two of us we spoil Tija rotten?
So, you’re match is for the #1 title right? That sounds exciting. Not bad for someone who’s been in a company for three months.
Well, you know, I guess I just have a knack for it.
You mean you know how to connect with people and they love you for it. I wish I could do that… and you know, be as big as you are
I laughed with her, she took after dad, which was short, really short. Kami had turned 19 a few months ago, but she looked even younger. She was 5’2” and weighed just over 100 pounds, which for someone who wrestled, was not a lot. She had told me the other girls in the FRD joked she was a ‘babyface’ in every sense of the word. It led to her losing, with alarming frequency.
Oh yeah, I suppose I should tell you to expect a significantly larger check than usual this week.
Oh? Did you get a new contract?
Yeah, a thousand each week and five hundred extra for pay per view matches.
Wow! That’s nice.
Plus, the hotel chain I’ve been staying at is giving me my room for free if I agree to appear in their commercials
Very nice. That’ll help a lot. But are you sure you keep enough? It seems like you’ve been sending us a lot of your pay.
Don’t worry about me, I’m doing fine.
Alright, fine. Now, tell me, who are you fighting for that World Championship?
Johnny Clash, Rye Payne, and Stytch
Really? You’re fighting Stytch? But aren’t you two the tag champions? You know… together?
Yes, but apparently we both deserved a title shot. Besides, it’ll give me a chance to show Stytch I’m not nearly as lazy as he seems to think I am.
Uh-oh, sounds like somebody is having issues with their partner…
Hey, I’m not the guy who’s accusing his partner of slacking off. Even though I’m still unbeaten, unimpressed, and last time I checked, the fastest rising star in American wrestling according to various wrestling fanzines. I mean, think about this, we’re opponents in this match, and he wants me to train with him. You’d think a veteran like him might realize that planning your match strategy right in front of one of your opponents isn’t the smartest thing to do. Besides, since when is it my fault that we don’t hang out anymore? Maybe if he stopped telling me his life story for the 500th time, or about the 500th time he’s slept with his wife, I wouldn’t mind so much, I’ve even told him I’m abstaining from sex until I get married, does that matter to him? No, I still get to sit through these annoying stories of girls he used to know, or girls he still knows, cheating on his wife, sleeping with his wife, it all sort of runs together into one big puddle of stuff I don’t give a crap about, but apparently I’m the one whose lazy for not wanting to train with him…
Okay, Okay I get it. So you two aren’t exactly matching each other’s online dating profiles perfectly. You’re still the champions.
Trust me, I know, but anyway, enough about Stytch and my problems…
What about the other two? Rye and Johnny? What’re they like?
Well, we haven’t seen hide nor hair of Rye Payne, so he’s probably doing the wild thang with his life-partner-I-mean-body-guard Tank “The Meat Cannon” Washington. And Johnny’s doing the same, but at least he’s making it obvious to everyone that he and Rage are an item.
Rage?
The guy who knows exactly what odors tic tacs can cover up.
Okay… I get it, come on Will, keep things 13+ at least.
Sorry, sorry, I’ve probably been hanging out with too many of the perverts here. Let’s talk about you guys, how’s Tija?
Oh yeah, I meant to tell you, you know how she tags along to my training sessions over at the castle?
The castle was the home arena for FRD.
Yeah…
Well, last week, she accidently scraped her knee while playing around in the bleachers, nothing too bad, but enough that our ring physician decided to patch her up. After that, every day we go over there, she spends the entire time following Dr. Franz around, helping him out with his job. Now she says she wants to study to be a doctor too. Isn’t that cute?
Why is the horrible face of William Turner flashing in my mind?
That’s very cool, I can see her being one too. It sounds like a perfect job for her.
I know right? So, she’s been working really hard is school, she studies all the time. Get’s 4’s or 5s in all of her classes, way better than either one of us ever did.
Is she staying active?
She has her physical class, and she plays softball after school with some of the other girls. She’s really social. And it helps her older brother is Germany’s golden boy of pro wrestling.
Does that really help that much?
Brigitte just named you #3 on sexiest German men alive. That helps a lot when making friends with other girls.
I was third on what? You’d think they’d have notified me. Who did I… no, nevermind, I don’t really want to know, I just hope Turner doesn’t find out, he’d turn it into some bizarre male stripper gimmick knowing him.
I’d pay to see that.
And you are not helping.
We kept at it for a little while longer, her teasing me was something she had always loved doing, afterwords we both laughed a good while, something I realized I hadn’t done for a long time.
You need to call more often, life’s too dull without you here. When are you coming home.
When am I coming home? I was going to say you guys should come see me here.
I don’t have time for that and you know it! I have to keep working over here, I don’t want to lose either of these jobs and we can’t afford for me to take any breaks.
You’re always so worried about money, things will work out Kami, you know they always do.
Just because they always have doesn’t mean they always will. Being an optimist isn’t reasonable Will, we need to be smart.
Alright, I’ll trust you, but at some point I will get you two over here, things are only going to get better from here
Yeah, I know, and as long as we watch out for each other, we’ll always be okay.
Mum would be proud of you Kami
The look on my sister’s face changed when I said that, her eyes seemed to drift off, away from the screen. There was a long pause. I can only guess what she was thinking of, but I have a pretty good guess. Finally she turned back to me, a smile on her face, but eyes that looked ready to cry.
Well, you go get ready for your match… I’ve got to go pick Tija up from school.
Okay, you say hi to her from me. I’ll talk to both of you later, and I love you both.
And we both love you.
I close the computer window and sat at the hotel desk for a minute, mulling over the conversation. The six hour difference meant I got precious little time to spend with my sisters, but it was always just what I needed to stay motivated. I glanced over at the computer clock and panicked. It read 11:07AM which meant I had 23 minutes to drive to an autograph session 30 minutes away. I didn’t like appearing in front of my fans without preparing, but I didn’t like no showing for them more. I grabbed whatever I possible could have needed, Title, T-Shirt, Cologne, and a banana (like I said, I was panicking) I rushed out my hotel door and immediately slowed to a stop. I laughed at my own stupidity. It was downtown New York, a 30 minute drive was the equivalent of a 10 minute walk.
I walked past the front desk where the fantastically fantastic girl who always knows exactly what I need before I know I do, and always has it ready for when I do, was behind the front desk, as I walked by she handed me a packet containing a shaving razor and gel, a comb, and a small bottle of moisturizer for my hands (what? I like soft supple hands, and the summer heat dries them out) Anyways, have I mentioned that this girl is fantastic? I headed out the door and walked to the place I was supposed to meet with the fans, a book and video store hyping their new collection of NYCCW classic PPVs. There was already a significant line starting to build, so I ducked into one of the stores bathroom. I quickly shaved, taking off the stubble that I usually let build over a couple of days, combed my crew cut straight and slicked it back with some water, and splashed a little Ralph Lauren #4 on my neck. I rubbed the moisturizer on my already dry hands and headed out to meet with the NYCCW fans.
Upon seeing me, many of the fans began cheering and whistling, that sort of thing never gets old, I responded by cupping my hands to my mouth and shouting YOU GUYS ROCK! and clapping my hands at them as I sat down. A few of the stores employees quickly set up a little merchandise selling place near the line for people to buy stuff to be signed if they didn’t bring their own, and handed me a nice collection of different coloured Sharpies.
It started out as your typical meet and greet autograph signing shin-dig, I did notice lots of people with the new Apostle Kried “Live By The Kried” Posters, those things were pretty cool. I signed, chatted, shook hands, shared jokes, gave compliments, the typical stuff I usually get to do with the greatest fans on the planet. It was about fifteen minutes into the event when a man walked up to the table and put a book down in front of me. I didn’t think too much about it until I opened the page and saw a picture of myself in a military uniform. I held the book in disbelief for a moment, than my eyes shot up to the man who had put it in front of me.
Nein, Gott nein es ist nicht Alexsander?
Ja, es ist so.
I all but sprang from the chair and embraced the man in a bear hug.
My Friend, it has been far too long. How have you been?
As good as I can be without my partner to watch my back.
Hey now, that is harsh. You know I couldn’t stay. After what happened to my parents I…
Yes, yes, I know, I don’t blame you, but I’ve yet to find a point man to match you. The GSG-9 takes only the best you know.
That’s why we survive where no one else can.
I got two weeks leave and decided to come see how you were doing, saw your face in the Brigitte… Sexiest man alive huh?
Now now, I was only number 3, and why exactly were you poking around in Brigitte?
Hey now, I won’t tell if you won’t, now then, will you sign our enlistment album or not?
I’ll do you one better.
I grab a black Sharpie and sign the picture of me, then I also sign the picture of the entire group of men I graduated from the training academy with, then I reach into my wallet and pull out a ticket to Caged Aggression and hand it to Alex.
Now, you come to the show, and watch me win the world title. Afterwords, we’ll go out and catch up.
Sounds like a plan to me.
I shake the hand of the man I called a brother, and he takes the book and heads off. I watch him go, then turn back to the other fans.
A beautiful speech Will, but what exactly was your point?
I’ve forgotten.
